Fashion for the Minimalist

Most people that know me know that I am a lover of style. I think I inherited that from my glamorous grandma who used to change her outfit if she saw someone wearing the same dress as her. I have loved all things feminine from as long as I can remember. Get dressed up for a night out? Do I need asking twice?! A trip to the supermarket can sometimes see me donning heels and a mini. Yep! I’m that kinda girl!

But I certainly wouldn’t say I am high maintenance. If anything, I have prioritised my career and studies above my love of fashion because I was too broke to buy anything, but wherever possible, I have wanted to look polished and groomed on a budget. It doesn’t have to cost a lot to look nice, right?

Since everyone and their Gran have been watching the Marie Kondo show on Netflix, there’s been a stampede to the local op shops with discarded belongings. Alas, those pair of jeans from 1999 no longer spark joy and that shell suit went out of style almost half a century ago. Time to say bye bye!

Once you’ve cleaned out your closet, it’s only right that you refill it. But, my advice is to refill with the right type of clothes and the type that do spark joy. As a lifestyle consultant, my focus is on helping clients choose outfits that authentically represent them, but at the same time, can be mixed with other items, maintaining a streamlined capsule wardrobe. We all want to take a sustainable approach, after all.

If you’re a city dweller like me, unit living can come at the cost of a lot of space. It can mean smaller rooms and less space for belongings. For this reason, embracing the French wardrobe concept is key to maintaining a minimalist approach. My tips for this include sticking to neutrals and wardrobe staples, choosing outfits that can be mixed and matched, and being conscious in your choices. This means to be mindful when shopping for an outfit- do you really love this? Where will you wear it? And with what? think about these before making the jump. By all means choose something that you love- if you really want it and you know you’re going to wear it often, that it sparks joy or is something that you feel that you need, then go ahead and get it. What you wear- your own personal style- is often a reflection of your inner word.
